Mars HOAX ALERT

HEADS UP! The following information about Mars coming close to the earth has been circulating, and apparently isn’t true. I initially got it in an email from a good, and intelligent friend. I saw it on another’s myspace page. I even heard a newswoman report it as fact - goes to show how much we can trust the news. But according to knowledgeable sources urbanlegends.com it’s old news (in 2003 Mars did come really close to the earth) repackaged to circulate again. And to think I was looking forward to it!

[ The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m.. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

This story is also well over a year old. Stale news is even less interesting than a hoax!

Thank you soo much! I just got off the phone with friend who told me the interesting news, and I stood there in disbelief because I swore I heard Mars was going to be closest to earth a couple of years ago. Plus, I was wondering, is it possible Mars to look like the size of the Moon to the naked eye?

Hi Amanda! Good point. If Mars ever did look to us the size of the full moon that would possibly mean we had been abducted! I don’t think it’s possible for Mars to appear to us earthlings - on earth - the size of the full moon. Would be awesome though! Abduct me…abduct me…abduct me, because I would love to see that sight!

Just a little knowledge I found when researching this. It was August 27, 2003 when it was the closest. At that point, it was supposed to be the equivelent of looking at a tennis ball around 550 meters away.. thats no where near the size of the moon.. you can definatly tell its orange and not bluish white like other stars.. but thats it.

this is really weird, because last night i saw a REALLY big planet, that was VERY orange, and i just thought ‘hey, something is wrong with the moon.’ but then i get home and find an e-mail from a friend talking about mars coming close to the earth. i got very excited! but now you are saying that it’s a hoax?!?! then WHAT DID I SEE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
i’d like someone to explain THAT to me.you may say it’s a hoax, but until i find out what i saw, i will believe that it was the planet mars, because it sure looked like all the pictures i’ve ever seen of mars.it was VERY big, very close to the horizon, and VERY ORANGE!!!!!!

Abbi, I’m not sure what you saw. Maybe you were in a state of abduction! Seriously, Mars often does appear as a big orange-red planet. It’s just not going to appear as big as the full moon unless you’re looking through a telescope. And by the way, last night the moon over San Diego was big, full and bright orange. Could it be that you saw the moon?

I heard the news on TV about a month ago regarding Mars, and just today, that exact email was printed in our newspaper as a news story.

I know how you feel Cindy. I would’ve loved seeing Mars that close up again. Disappointing, for sure. And to think the news is reporting it as fact is insane! Like I said, I saw it on our news channel also! And I’m not in some little isolated town. I’m in San Diego, Ca! Crazy. Better watch out for all the other myths, hoaxes, lies, and propaganda they’re spreading.

Just a follow up

I sent an email to the local rag that printed it. I gave them web sites to check out the facts. Obviously, they didn’t check or follow up on their sources. So much for believing whats printed in the news…lol

You need to tell the dimensions of Mars because this dint even help me.
